Last weekend was a general bye in the local competition as the George Tooke Shield representative teams took to the field against the Woodbridge Cup teams in their annual clash.
In the men’s encounter, the Woodbridge Cup side prevailed by 42-22 in a highly entertaining match. The Woodbridge side jumped out to an early lead with a flawless opening 15 mins. The George Tooke side decided that the best defence is attack and used their speed to get back into the
match. It seemed there was sense of too much to early from the Woodbridge team as they began to lose their early momentum. However, the balance of power shifted again as the teams went try for try in the middle third of the game.
In the latter part of the contest, it was the relentless, hard hitting forward play from the Woodbridge team inspired by a Man of the Match performance by Jackson Gersbach that saw the maroon and golds run riot over a bruised and battered GTS team in the dying minutes.
It was an entertaining game of Rugby League with every player on the field contributing to a memorable game with a fine win for the Woodbridge Cup squad by 42-22.
In the under 18’s tackle Canberra Region Rugby League 22 defeated Woodbridge Cup 10.
In the under 20 league tag, the Woodbridge Cup 14 defeated the Regan Cup side 10.
The George Tooke Shield senior girls kept the local flag flying with a convincing 54-0 win over their Woodbridge Cup Counterparts.
It was an outstanding day of representative football held at Lawson Oval Grenfell with a good attendance to see the best of local talent going around.
This Saturday sees the George Tooke Shield club rounds resume with the Boorowa teams taking on Googong at Googong. The Boorowa teams have started the season slow and need a win to avoid falling off the pace as they head into the middle part of the season. Both Boorowa sides should win, but at home, Googong could present a few headaches.
In other GTS games to be played this weekend Snowy River Bears host Bungendore, Crookwell host Harden in the match of the day and North Canberra host the UC Stars.
The next home game for Boorowa will be on May 30 when they host the Snowy River Bears.
