The Arctic like weather conditions at Jindabyne last Saturday weren’t enough to stop a red-hot Rovers team from turning up the heat on the Snowy River Bears with a convincing 52-22 victory.
The win all but ensures a semi-final spot for Boorowa who still have hopes of securing fourth position and getting a home semi-final. Boorowa now has two crucial games ahead against Harden and Bungendore that will determine their finishing position in the top five.
The Rovers dominated the game from the outset and ran in nine tries with seven scored by an inform backline. The Bears were plucky running in four of their own, but the Rovers never really looked troubled and were happy to get the two points from the longest and coldest road trip of the season.
The Best and Fairest three points went to Cooper Cross who is in great form going into the big games ahead. Nick Stephens got two points and was at his destructive best scoring two tries, whilst Matt Canellis also scored a double and got a point. Players Player went to the consistent Joe Prosper who continues to impress each week.
Boorowa 52: Matt Canellis 2, Nick Stephens 2, Riley Powderley, Charlie Fogg, Will Fahey, Adam Hinds and Austin Power tries, Cooper Cross 9 goals defeated Snowy River Bears 22.
In other George Tooke Shield games last weekend, Harden 24 beat North Canberra 10 to all but wrap up the minor premiership. Crookwell 48 destroyed Bungendore 16 and the Googong Goannas finally cracked their first win beating the UC Stars 26-18. Rumour has it they are still partying at the Googong dam.
Unfortunately, the league tag saw the Boorowa Roverettes have to forfeit due to illness ravaging the side. Whilst this is a setback, the team should be back on deck this weekend.
In other league tag games last weekend. Harden 34 beat North Canberra 8, Crookwell 18 beat Bungendore 8, and the UC Stars 40 beat Googong 6.
The Roverettes should still make the semi-finals despite the weekend setback, but they will be up against a red-hot Harden Hawkettes who are yet to taste defeat and have conceded just 64 points all season.
This Saturday sees the old rivalry between the Harden Hawks and the Boorowa Rovers re-ignite in a crucial clash for Boorowa. This could be one of the games of the season so far. Their first clash earlier in the season went down to the wire with Harden prevailing by 26-20 in a see sawing contest and this Saturday should be just as close. Boorowa has a much more settled line up and a bench that has so much needed depth and experience. The Rovers will need to limit the damage caused by Jayden Cutting at half and fullback Jack Nicolls for the unbeaten Hawk’s, both of whom created havoc in their game earlier in the season.
In other GTS games to be played this weekend, Bungendore will look to bounce back against the UC Stars at Bungendore. Googong will host Crookwell with the Goannas still on a high after their first win last Saturday. The final clash is a clash of the Bears with Snowy River taking on North Canberra in Jindabyne in a last throw of the dice for the mountain men.
Saturday will be old boys’ day at the showground so it’s the perfect time to catch up with the Rovers of teams gone by and exchange old memories of seasons gone by. The it’s off to the Courthouse Hotel for retro night and who knows, some old Rovers may just set the dance floor alight. See you at the footy.
