The Boorowa Goldies ran out victors against the Harden Red Devils on Saturday at the Boorowa Showground, capping off a fine ladies’ day for the club and town.
The Times caught up with man mountain and Co Coach Keagan Size, who was happy to get the win.
“We got over the Harden boys on the weekend. It was a bit of a turnaround because they beat us at Harden by a little bit as we were a little bit under strength.
“They were under strength this weekend too.
“We wanted two good wins and to celebrate Ladies’ Day. It was a game of two halves.”
Some of the refereeing decisions left both sides puzzled but that can often be the way in Country Rugby when a Ref has 30 players to watch and normally has the assistance of untrained supporters with a beer in hand running the touch line from each club. These ‘assistants’ also assist in the officiating of goal conversions. It part of the reason why the game continues to suffer in the bush and why it is well behind its league counterpart. Hell, they should be thanked for putting their hand up in the first place, but it’s why Rugby is in the dark ages in this department.
Harden had the run of the ball in the first half and probably could have posted 5 tries.
“We won the game with possession, set piece and just recycled the ball. And held our patience and were able to grind it.
“It’s probably a credit to our older fellas, that older players have stepped up, like Ryan Simpson.
Rob Stirzaker off the bench at 9 was pretty impressive. He scored an exceptional individual try off the back of a penalty.
“Harden scored in the 80th minute when we had the whole lot on the bench. The final score was 28-15.
“It was a shame to see Harden’s Ed McGeoch has injured his shoulder again, so he will be out for a while, he is one of their best.”
“This week we play Coota and they’ve come off the back of a pretty big win in the memorial game they had against the Yabs, which is going to make it a big challenge.
“On the ladder we won with a bonus point this weekend so we’ve taken over the top.
“The top four are us, Harden, Coota and Condobolin with Young dropping to fifth.
“We’ve already played them twice, and unless something goes terribly wrong for us to play them again, unless it’s the grand final.
“Cootamundra are a team that on their day will win. We have just got to control them.
