Dust off the Akubra, muster your mates and get ready for one unforgettable June Long Weekend. The program for the 2026 Henry Lawson Festival in Grenfell has been released along with the announcement of the official festival guests and a much-anticipated visiting author.
Celebrating the theme “Legends & Larrikins”, the festival is this year honouring Grenfell legends – Mary and Peter Moffitt OAM. This VIP couple have played a pivotal role in the community and the festival throughout their lives contributing greatly to the region.
Held from 4-8 June 2026 in Lawson’s birthplace of Grenfell, the festival will once again transform the town into a lively celebration of arts, storytelling, music, heritage and good old-fashioned country fun.
This year promises a vibrant mix of country charm, bush humour, creativity and classic Australian community spirit inspired by the timeless works of Henry Lawson.
Festival organisers are inviting locals, visitors, performers, artists and proud Aussie characters of all kinds to be part of one of regional NSW’s most iconic and longest-running arts festivals.

ABOUT THE 2026 OFFICIAL GUESTS
Official festival guest couple – Mary and Peter Moffitt – actually met while appearing in the Grenfell Dramatic Society’s production of “The Boyfriend” at the festival more than five decades ago.
A third-generation solicitor in Grenfell, Peter Moffitt was awarded an OAM in 2014 for his Service to the Community of Weddin. He has played a vital role championing sport, tourism, economic development and health related initiatives. Peter’s long list of achievements, especially in improving health outcomes for the region, continue to make an exceptional difference to the Grenfell community.
Mary came to Grenfell from Wagga taking up her first teaching position at Grenfell Public School in 1974. Many would also know the much-loved teacher from her time at Bribbaree Public School and through her extensive community volunteering. Mary has been heavily involved with the festival assisting Peter with the festival fun run for 12 years and coordinating the Verse and Short Story competition as a long-time festival committee member.
MEET A DEBUT AUTHOR INTERWOVEN WITH THE LAWSON LEGACY
Her family’s story made Henry Lawson famous. But was it his to tell?… Leading with a question like that on the cover of her debut work, Kyra Geddes is set to join the festival this year with an intriguing author talk.
The Story Thief melds fact and fiction into a stirring family saga set against shifting landscapes and pivotal moments in Australian history. Don’t miss Kyra’s fascinating 40-minute presentation delving into the unique historical context behind her writing, starting with Henry Lawson, Louisa Lawson and the ongoing impact of ‘The Drover’s Wife’ in shaping our national identity.
Along with highlighting some of the real people and places featured in her novel, Kyra will reveal the personal inspirations which helped sustain her ten-year-long research and writing journey. Signed copies of The Story Thief will also be available for purchase at the event from local favourite bookstore – The Tin Cupboard.

LARGER-THAN-LIFE CHARACTERS & LEGENDARY ARTISTS
The 2026 festival theme shines a spotlight on the larger-than-life characters, cheeky humour and resilient spirit found throughout Lawson’s writing and still deeply woven into country Australia today.
A great example of the spirit of the festival is legendary duo Mel and Susie, who will be bringing the larrikin energy all the way from Lightning Ridge with bush poetry at The Conron Store across the Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend.
These Australian champion bush poets and yarn-spinners will entertain with stand-up poetry, good old Aussie yarns, a bit of singing and a lot of Queensland bull. These legends have performed across the globe including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, US poetry gathering and two tours of New Zealand.
Grenfell is well known as the small country town that attracts big up and coming music talent. This year the festival will feature Shaun Kirk who is bringing his award-winning blues and soul sound to The Cordial Factory on the Friday night all the way from Melbourne.
Local music legend – Josh Maynard – will again be discovering untapped local music talent in the highly popular busking competition with a solid line-up set to hit the stage during the festival.

Grenfell – An Historic Gold Town
Grenfell is one of the historic gold towns of Central West NSW, located between Forbes and Cowra.
The town began during the gold rush of 1866.

Larrikans Unite At Henry Lawson Festival
Grenfell will take centre stage this June long weekend as the 2026 Henry Lawson Festival returns for an “epic” celebration of history, culture and country hospitality.
Embracing the new theme, Larrikins and Legends, this year’s four-day festival will pay tribute to the humour and spirit that shaped Henry Lawson’s writing and continues to define regional Australia today.
Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, said the festival is one of regional NSW’s great cultural events and an important opportunity for locals and visitors to support Grenfell’s business community.
“There is so much history and charm to be discovered in Grenfell, and the wonderful thing about the Henry Lawson Festival is that it bundles all of that together in one epic celebration,” Ms Cooke said.
“If you haven’t visited Grenfell before or for some time, this long weekend really is the best opportunity to explore this beautiful part of the world and experience the wonderful exhibitions and artists the festival is known for.”
Each year, the festival features an outstanding showcase of poetry, art, music, exhibitions and performances, alongside national competitions celebrating Australian literature and the arts.
Ms Cooke is encouraging residents across the electorate to support this major event.
“What makes the Henry Lawson Festival so special isn’t just the program but the hardworking people behind it,” she said.
“This event is only possible thanks to the dozens of volunteers, organisers, artists and community members who give up their time to bring it to life, and that’s something our whole region can support.”

Principal Accountant Emma Batkin likes numbers, more than your average Joe.
“I often joke that if I could speak in numbers rather than words, I’d be a much better communicator,” she says.

Growing up, Emma says she was always passionate about finding different ways to help people. After hearing several horror stories of poor accounting work that friends and family had experienced, she says it was the push she needed to make a change.
After completing her university placement in an accounting firm in 2013 (the exact same one she now owns and operates), Emma says it was the perfect fit from the very beginning.
“I graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting/Financial Planning from CSU Wagga in 2014, and other than a six-month overseas trip where I did accounting work for a non-profit organisation (Mercy Ships), I have worked here ever since,” she says.
Although Emma briefly considered become a high school teacher when she was younger, she says sometimes the perfect opportunity can just fall on you.

Kath Holz knows a thing or two about style.
In fact, her shop, The Natural Home, in Grenfell stocks items that will suit any household or colour scheme.
For almost 11 years, Kath and her husband, Wayne, have been running their furniture and homewares business, providing quality items for the community to find the perfect addition to their homes.
With a “rustic, modern” look, the store stocks items that follow a natural, neutral colour palette, which means they will perfectly slot into any household.
Accidentally “falling” into the business, Kath says the store was once a grocery shop.
“It was likely the first grocery shop here, but it had slowly petered out,” she says.
“So, we closed the shop for a couple of years and then reopened with the furniture before getting into more of the homewares.”
The natural look has always been a constant colour scheme within the store.
“It’s an easy palette to work with,” says Kath.
Stocking one-of-a-kind pieces, Kath says they’ve always got something special in store.
“We get a lot of people who come through and go, ‘wow, I would never have thought this would be in Grenfell’,” she says.
“They’re one off and unlike what you get in the big cities.
“[Over there] everything is the same… we get something a little different.”
According to Kath, they see customers from across the region travel to see their items in search of something unique.

The Coffee Shop That Provides Just About Anything
What does a local coffee shop mean for a community?
According to Unwind owner Cathie Logan, everything.
Established in 2018, Cathie was inspired to open her own coffee shop after working in a canteen.
“There was a need for one in the town because there wasn’t one,” she says.
“The town needed somewhere that had reasonably priced food and was a nice place to sit.”
Unlike many businesses who did it tough during the 2020 lockdowns, Cathie says they thrived.
“The pubs and clubs shut their restaurants, and we kept providing food and delivering,” she says.
On Fridays, she says, Unwind had themed nights with food from different countries.
“People just went berserk for it, because they couldn’t get anything,” she says.
“There was Chinese [food] but that was all that was available in town.”
Although Cathie says she sometimes questions her decision to open Unwind with all of the extra work she’s taken on, she says it is her customers that keep her going.
“We’ve got really loyal customers, and people have heard of us everywhere because we get people referencing us,” she says.
“It’s also good that I’ve been able to provide jobs for staff too.”
Although she can’t simplify anything at Unwind as her ‘favourite’, she says she loves seeing people enjoying themselves every day.
They’ve also paid homage to their themed nights during lockdowns with the return of one every few months.
“So far we’ve had a Greek night where we smashed plates and we’ve had an Italian night too,” says Cathie.
“Our next one is in July where we will have an Irish night because my chef is Irish.”
Featuring Irish food, Cathie says they will have a local couple perform at the venue to encourage the patrons to get up and have a dance.
Unwind isn’t just limited to their stellar coffees, and does catering for functions, weddings, business meetings and any other event that requires a good feed!
The catering services Cathie provides also includes a snazzy coffee van.

The Painter Whose Passion Knows No Bounds
Since the age of 12, Alex Ali has been perfecting his craft.
25 years later, Alex’s passion for painting has seen his business, Central West Painting, thrive within Grenfell.
“Honestly, I started off just wanting to leave school and earn money,” says Alex.
“My brother is a painter, so I decided to follow his footsteps and also take up that trade.”
Leaving school at age 12 in Lebanon, Alex proceeded to complete his apprenticeship in painting before moving to Australia at age 18. From there, he gained his painting license and continued to learn in his trade before opening his own business.
Alex has now been running Central West Painting for six years.
“I live in a wonderful small community, and it is so satisfying to have happy
customers and create a great result for them,” he says.
“We are a small family-run business that I run alongside my partner Clare, who helps in the office and sometimes on the tools.
“I’m proud to be part of the Grenfell community [by] servicing the Grenfell area and surrounding towns.”
Alex says his keen attention to detail has seen him built a strong rapport within his beloved community.
“We pride ourselves on being trustworthy, reliable and fair,” he says.
“We always strive to leave the job spotless and mainly rely on word of mouth for our
business.”
Alex says their goal is always leaving a finish that will last for a lifetime. Customer satisfaction, he says, is paramount to a job done well.
Alex and Clare have experience in both commercial and residential painting and say there is no such thing as a job too big or little.
“My favourite part of my job is meeting new people and being able to make a real difference,” he says.

Hairdresser’s 40 years in Haircare Celebrated in Grenfell
Tanya Simmonds has been specialising in hairdressing for 40 years. She’s also the owner and operator of the Grenfell Hair Salon.
“I was deciding [whether] I do hairdressing or nursing when I was still in high school,” she says.
“I did do work experience at a local hair salon, which I enjoyed.
“When that finished, I went back to school and also filled out papers for nursing school as well, but [I] was very surprised when I was asked to do hairdressing.”
This, she says, was the start of her long and industrious hairdressing career, something she has never looked back on.
“There is a lot of great things about hairdressing,” she says.
“I thoroughly enjoy cutting, especially when you [get to do] a big change for the client.
“Clients can sometimes come in not feeling the best, and then come out feeling like a million bucks.”
It’s this power of change that Tanya says she loves the most about her job.
As the single owner and operator of Grenfell Hair Salon, Tanya says it’s important that her clients know her entire attention in on them because unlike busier salons, she’s a one-woman show.
“I’ve been told I’m a great listener and give the clients what they need most of the time,” she says.
Although she says it can be a challenge sometimes, the reward is worth it every single time.
Offering men’s, women’s and children cuts, Tanya says she also offers perms, colours and blow-dries.
Using Natural Look Australia products (an Australian owned and made company) Tanya runs by appointments but is able to do some walk-ins when available.
Open Tuesday to Friday and on Saturdays by appointment, she says she is always looking forward to helping her clients feel like the best version of themselves.
