The Crookwell Green Devils were just a little too hot for the Boorowa Rovers last Saturday defeating the home team by 17-10 in a battle of the defences. The league tag match took a similar path with Boorowa narrowly defeating Crookwell 14-10 in a contest that went right down to the last play of the game. The day was a special one as the club celebrated Ladies Day and all the wonderful work and support that that they do for the players and the club. It was an enormous success as the ladies enjoyed the odd bottle of champagne whilst watching two great games of footy. All money from the day went to Neuroendocrine Cancer research.
Boorowa looked to avenge a bad round two loss at Crookwell and at times it appeared that would happen. Whilst the Rovers produced some outstanding goal line defence, they unfortunately also produced far too many costly errors, particularly whilst in attacking positions.
The first quarter of the game was spent with both teams trying to get good field position. It was the Boorowa line which cracked first with Crookwell capitalising on a Rovers error to score from lose range. Four minutes later the Devils were in again to stretch the margin out to 12-0. Four minutes before halftime, Adam Hinds got the first Rovers try crossing out wide after some good lead up work. Cooper Cross converted to reduce the margin to six. On the stroke of halftime, Cameron Picker snapped a field goal from in front of the sticks to give the visitors a 13-6 lead as they went in for oranges. It was a smart play by Picker in a tight contest which would prove to be crucial.
After the break, defence dominated again until Boorowa flyer Adam Hinds scored an unconverted try to reduce the score to 13-10. With eleven minutes remaining, Jack Dawson scored his second try for Crookwell to push the margin back out to seven points.
Despite their best efforts, Boorowa couldn’t breach the line again and the score remained 17-10 at full-time. Crookwell were the better team but for the second time in a week it was a case of one that got away from the Rovers against another team that will play in the semi-finals.
The Best and Fairest points went to Nick Stephens with 3 points; Matt Canellis got 2 points and 1 point each went to young guns Josh Dean and Josh Noakes. Riley Powderley was voted players player.
Crookwell 17: Jack Dawson 2, Sean Ward 1 try, Sean Ward 2 goals, Cameron Picker 1 Field Goal beat Boorowa 10: Adam Hinds 2 tries, Cooper Cross 1 Goal.
In other GTS games last weekend, Harden 84 beat Googong 6, UC Stars 28 beat the Snowy River Bears 4 and North Canberra 30 beat Bungendore 26.
The league tag saw the Roverettes prevail in a close contest by 14-10 over Crookwell. The highlight of the day was the 100th game for Mackella Pye and the ladies were determined that this milestone would be one to remember for the now veteran No.9.
Early in the match, Crookwell seemed destined to spoil the party scoring the opening try after 11 minutes for a 6-0 lead. Boorowa bounced back through a try to the star of the day Mackella Pye for a 6-4 scoreline. On the stroke of halftime, fullback Lily Porch opened up the defence to score, and the home side went to the break with an 8-6 lead. It was a defensive tussle in the second stanza with one try apiece that saw Boorowa do enough to get the win and a vital two competition points.
The three Best and Fairest points went to Gen Carmody who has been great all season. Two points went to Rachel Stewart and Lily Porch whilst one point went to Cheyenne Grocott-Robins. Gen Carmody was voted Players Player.
This Saturday sees the teams head to Kaleen Oval in Canberra where they take on the North Canberra Bears. If the Rovers can produce the same defensive effort of the last two weeks, they should win. Their attack let them down last Saturday, but when they play to their ability, they have fire power to score a lot of points. The Rovers lost to the Bears 34-14 in round two but as mentioned last week the Rovers are a much more settled outfit now.
In the league tag, the Roverettes will need to overcome a very good Bears defence who have lost just once this season against Harden. They can take heart in the fact that they push North Canberra all the way in round two before going down 22-10.
In other GTS games to be played this weekend, Googong host Bungendore, Snowy River Bears host Harden and Crookwell take on the UC Stars at Crookwell.
Boorowa’s next home game will be on July 11th when they host the Googong Goanna’s.
