Wreathed in fog and night, Boorowa residents awoke at dawn to attend an ANZAC Service at their War Memorial on Marsden Street.
A minute silence was observed at 11am following a march at 10.30am.
Residents might have noticed a Spitfire fly over Marsden Street at 9.50am.
The carrier, a Supermarine Spitfire Mk VIII was part of the Royal Australian Air Force’s Temora Historic Flight, was acquired by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1945 following the conclusion of WWII.
Placed into storage as service was not required, the aircraft was restored in 1985 before being donated to the Temora Aviation Museum in 2002.
It is one of only three flying Spitfires within Australia.
In an online address about the ANZAC Day commemorations, President Maria Biglands said:
“On behalf of the Boorowa RSL Sub-Branch, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to all members of the community who attended the Anzac Day services in both Boorowa and Rugby. It was truly heartwarming to see such strong turnouts as we honoured our veterans and serving members.”
“These services are made possible entirely by volunteers. Many hours – and often many years – of dedication go into ensuring these commemorations are conducted with the respect and dignity they deserve.
“This year, we felt the loss of one of those dedicated volunteers who prepared the Boorowa gunfire breakfast for 50 years.
“Vale Coop. His contribution will not be forgotten.
“Despite this loss, our community continues to step forward in support of remembrance and tradition. I would like to acknowledge a few individuals and groups who made a significant contribution this year:
• Tony Crocker, for organising the Rugby service,
• Bruce Nixon, for taking on the role of MC at Rugby,
• Ted Gibbons, for 50 years of flag duty at Rugby – a remarkable commitment since the age of 16,
• The wonderful Rugby ladies, for the trench breakfast,
• Rosco Williams, who once again stepped up to the tongs for the gunfire breakfast, and,
• Khaled El Sayed, for bringing along “the Beast” in remembrance of her heyday.
“To everyone who attended, purchased a raffle ticket, wore a poppy, or supported our stalls – thank you. Your presence and contribution ensure these traditions continue.
“There are many who work quietly behind the scenes to uphold established protocols and maintain traditions such as two-up. We are deeply grateful to each and every one of you, as well as the dedicated team of the Boorowa RSL Sub-Branch.
“Lest We Forget.”
Thank you to the students and staff of Boorowa Central School who proudly participated in the 2026 ANZAC Day march and town service on Saturday. Many represented the school whilst others were members of the Drumming Band, Army Cadets or marching on behalf of a family member.
Congratulations to School Captains Belle and Mylee for their beautiful reflections on ‘What ANZAC Day means to me’. Great examples of exceptional student leadership.
