The South West Slopes Cricket league switched to 20/20 mode providing some thrilling games last Saturday. There was none better than the Harden V Boorowa Clash which went down to the last over with the Hornets prevailing by just nine runs.
The Hornets won the toss and got away to a very slow start. Harden were in all sorts of trouble at 5/31 in eight overs and looking like they would post only a small total. However, Jeffrey Brown had other ideas as he scored an unbeaten 61 off 46 balls to allow Harden to post a competitive total of 7/119 on a tricky batting surface.
Best of the Boorowa bowlers was Ollie Miller with 2/16 and Ben Klose 2/20. Liam Birks, Josh Gorham, and Nathan Schofield picked up one wicket each.
In reply, Boorowa also started slowly before James Green fell for 16 with the score on 28. They slumped to 3/40 before Nathan Schofield and Olly Miller combined for a 55-run stand to reach 3/95 and put the Bottles in a winning position.
The Bottles needed 24 off three overs but the pressure applied from some good Hornets bowling dismissed the rock of the batting, Nathan Scofield for 39 off 58 Balls. Ollie Miller perished shortly after for 37 runs off 30 Balls. Boorowa needed 14 off the final over but the task proved too much with the innings ending on 6/110.
Going into the second last round before Xmas, the ladder sees Temora Bowling Club on 52, Temora Renegades 52, Cootamundra Bulls 51, Burrangong 47, Harden 46, Temora Leprechauns 38, Criterion Bin Chickens 37, Boorowa 32, Murringo Mavericks 25, Grenfell 25, and Bribbaree 20.
This week the Bottles return home for the penultimate game before the Xmas break. They will take on the Bribbaree Rams who are also desperate for a win. This will be a good contest with loads of big hitting assured in the 20/20 format.
The under 11’s saw the local derby played between the Boorowa Golds and Boorowa Greens in a mate verses mate clash. It didn’t disappoint with a high scoring game that saw the Greens prevail by 50 runs. The Green’s made an outstanding 172 off their 20 overs whilst Gold’s tried valiantly but could only manage 122 in reply off 20 overs.
For the Greens, Angus Burton-Taylor was sensational picking up 5/14 in just 3 overs. Ned Halls was also destructive with 3/8 whilst Arthur Allen 1/8 and Lachlan Halls 1/2 were the other wicket takers. The Greens batting was led by George Manion with 27 and Lachlan Halls 26.
The Golds batting was headed by William Griffin who batted well with good support from Rosie Scott and Thomas Scott. For the Golds, the best bowlers were Thomas Scott with 2/14 and William Griffin 2/17. Other wicket takers were Annabelle Corcoran, Charlotte Corcoran, Rosie Scott, Thomas Dwyer, and Jack Corcoran with one scalp each.
The Boorowa under 13’s once again battled hard all day but fell short of victory by three wickets. They made 8/122 whilst the King Fishers passed the total seven wickets down at 7/125. For Boorowa, Octavian Miller batted well to make 30 whilst Jacob Halls made an unbeaten 27. Digby Merriman played a useful cameo for 16. An opening stand of 56 by the Kingfishers put them in the box seat but Boorowa never gave in having the opposition struggling at 7/106.
Unfortunately, Boorowa couldn’t remove the stubborn tail enders to complete the win.
Ocky Miller took 2/6 for Boorowa whilst other wicket takers were Alfie Shean 1/12, William Miller 1/18, and Jacob Halls 1/3. They may not be winning too many games, but they are very competitive and doing a wonderful job considering Boorowa hasn’t had an under 13’s in recent times.
Some of this side is also starting to appear in the senior competition which is great news for Boorowa Cricket. This week sees the final round of games of junior cricket before the Christmas break.
In the under 11’s, The Greens play the Young Smashers at Young Public School whilst the Golds take on the Harden Hornets at the Boorowa recreation ground before the Bottles game at 1.30pm.
The under 13’s will take on the Strikers at Henry Miller oval.
