Boorowa’s Irish Woolfest is a major event for NSW and a highlight on the Hilltops Region’s Spring calendar. While the ‘Running of the Sheep’ and the main festivities are held from Friday, 3, to Sunday, 5 October, a more niche, but just as enthralling aspect will be the announcement of the winner of the Upcycled Fashion competition. Organiser, Lyn Diskon, said that although the competition itself is closed, keep an eye out next year for another round.
“We have got 19 entries, which is amazing. They’re currently on display in a shop in Marsden Street here in Boorowa, and they will be judged in the next week or so, and the winners will be announced at Wool Fest.
“It’s there for Wool Fest. All of them have at least 50 per cent wool in them. The creations are just amazing, people’s imagination and what they’ve done is great, they’ve come from all around. There are quite a few from Young. There’s from Rye Park, from Harden, from Queensland, and even one from New Zealand.
“I’ve never done this before, never, but I’m a seamstress, a sewer. I love upcycling and I thought, well, if we can do something in line with Wool Fest, I think it’s a great opportunity and the people who have entered you can see from their comments and their entries that they feel the same.
“Go along and have a look in the shop window. It is near the Newsagency. The owners have been very generous and let me put the display in there.
“Ray White Rural here in Boorowa have also been very generous with their sponsorship, and I’ve got a small sponsorship from the Rec Club as well.
“People should come and have a look and consider entering next year, because the feedback has been so good.
“It will possibly be an annual thing if I can get somebody else to help for a while in a couple of years, then that’ll be great.
“I always enjoy Wool Fest, but being part of Rotary, I’ll be working in the Op Shop the whole weekend.
“It’s the biggest weekend for the Op Shop each year. It’s the biggest weekend for most things each year. It’ll make a lot of money for the Op Shop.”
There are also entries from Young High School that are currently on display, showing the skills of even some of the youngest members of the community.
