Boorowa Central School had a group of students who went to the WIN Entertainment Centre over the course of a few days last week to participate in the NSW-wide Southern Stars event. It was a full-on set of days preparing and performing with plenty of fun.
Meg McIntosh, who attended the event, said it was a rewarding experience for both teachers and kids who went.
“Southern Stars is an arena spectacular. Lots of NSW Public Schools come together, and bring a performance together that involves playing music, singing, dancing, acting, choir, all of the things, and it’s all run by students and public school teachers to bring items together,” she said.
“It’s held at WIN Entertainment Centre, so it suits that arena feel with all the lights, and it’s all professionally done.
“The kids absolutely loved it. We did go down to WIN Entertainment Centre for rehearsal a couple of months back, and it wasn’t all built up with all the lights on the stage, and they thought, Oh, this is massive. When we got there last week and they saw all the lights, a live band, singers that were students, and them being just really professional, they were gobsmacked by how much room it all took up, but then just loved the experience.
“It was a really jam-packed itinerary. We went down and rehearsed on Wednesday, did a tech rehearsal, and the students did a finale where they got all 3,000 kids onto the floor to dance and sing all together.
“Then the second day, we did more final rehearsals and a dress rehearsal, and then we did a matinee and an evening performance, both on Friday and Saturday, so four shows all up.
“The two Saturday performances were sold-out crowds at the Entertainment Centre, which was awesome.
“A big highlight was also being able to go on an excursion that got our kids away and opened them up to a new city, and as for the performance, just being around like-minded public school kids who have that talent and that potential and somewhere for that potential to be harvested is really special.
“For the kids being able to see things to aspire to as well, like they’re seeing year 12 students who are soloist singers who are outstanding professional grade, and they getting to really see that and appreciate that a bit more as well.
“I would like to thank the Boorowa community for allowing us to be involved in it.
“We did have a lot of support to be able to be involved in it, which was awesome. It can’t happen without a team, and it was just an incredible experience for the kids to be able to see that and hopefully be involved again soon.”
