The Boorowa Horse Auction is set to return on Friday, August 9, at the Boorowa Showground, and organisers are expecting another strong turnout following the success of previous events.
With a growing reputation and a loyal following, the sale continues to attract buyers and sellers from across the region. The event features a broad mix of ridden horses, penned horses, and a range of saddlery and tack, catering to both experienced horse owners and newcomers alike.
“We sell the saddlery and tack first, then the ridden horses, and finally the penned horses,” said David Smith, the auctioneer.
“There’s usually a pretty good turnout. Everyone is pretty happy with it.” Smith, who works closely with Boorowa’s Gary described as the local go-to man says the auction is a well-oiled operation.
“Gary pens the horses, helps manage the yards, and does all the hands-on work. The vendors prepare the horses before the sale, and then we just turn up on the day and try to transfer ownership.”
While the event welcomes a wide variety of horse breeds, Thoroughbreds are notably excluded from the sale. “We don’t sell any Thoroughbreds because there’s a chain of events that has to take place with them it’s just too much work,” Smith explained. “But we sell everything else.”
The sale has drawn significant interest in recent months, with ridden horses fetching prices up to $5,000 or $6,000. Smith said that while the ridden horses attract high bids, the penned horses are also in strong demand.
“A lot of people enjoy buying penned horses because they like the challenge of breaking them in themselves. They’re fairly well sought after for that reason,” he said. “It’s always interesting with horses because they’re really only worth what someone’s willing to pay for them.”
The Boorowa Horse Auction has filled a much-needed gap in the region, with very few general horse sales still operating.
“There’s the big Stock Horse Sale in Tamworth, and the Thoroughbred sales, but there weren’t any general horse sales left in this area,” Smith said. “There used to be a regular sale in Young, but that’s gone now. A lot of the buyers and sellers we get were the same people who supported that sale.”
On average, the auction sees 80 to 90 registered bidder numbers, which translates to several hundred people in attendance. With strong community support and a reputation for fairness and quality, the Boorowa Horse Auction continues to go from strength to strength.
