Petition for a main road to be built from Cowra to Mt Collins via Neila.
A local newspaper reported that the following letter was read at the Waugoola Shire Council meeting by Mr. G. A. Dunn of “Jeringomar”.
“I beg to hand you a petition on behalf of residents re a main road, and desire to say that the Murrungal Shire Council has let a contract for the building of a low level bridge across the Boorowa River, near Bennett’s Springs. As a diversion has been made eliminating the road across Hovell’s Creek, travellers will (when the bridge is completed) have an alternate route to Boorowa from Cowra, this way being only about nine miles further than via the Cowra-Breakfast Creek road to Boorowa. As the road referred to in the petition runs practically through the centre of the Murrungal Shire, you will see that the petitioners have a strong case”.
THE PETITION
‘We, the residents of Cowra and Boorowa districts, desire you to bring before your council our petition, that the road from Cowra to Mt Collins, via Neila, be proclaimed a main road.

The Murrungal Shire Council has been served by residents with a petition that the road from Mt. Collins to Gunnary (being a continuation of the Cowra Mt. Collins road) be proclaimed a Main road, and we desire your cooperation to this end’.
‘The district residents are asking the Murrungal Shire Council to build a bridge over the Boorowa River on this road (near Bennett’s Springs) and that road runs practically through the centre of the Murrungal Shire and is fed by the Cowra-Darby’s Falls – Hovell’s Creek road; Reid’s Flat-Nimby road; Spring Vale-Breakfast Creek road and Wattamondara-Marongla road.
It has had a mail service running on it for the past sixty years (from Cowra to Reid’s Flat), and is being served with a bi-weekly motor mail service, with every prospect of a tri-weekly mail service (a mail to and fro every day) at an early date. The Murrungal Shire Council has (with another road applied to the authorities that the road herein referred to receive consideration as a Main Road’.
The petition was signed by over thirty residents. Councillor Dickson said the residents had contributed £600 towards the cost of the bridge.
Consideration was deferred until the next meeting.
