As of July 1, road work speed limits will be removed in NSW when there are no workers on site outside of construction hours.
New legislation will require temporary speed limits in all road work zones across NSW to be managed in compliance with the new Standard, which was finalised and published by Transport for NSW.
Under the new Traffic Control at Work Sites (TCAWS) Standard, speed reductions in construction zones must be removed during non-work hours, when it is safe to do so.
If no workers are on site during out of work hours, the road work speed limit will be increased pending safety for motorists and pedestrians.
Labelled as a “commonsense change” by the government to assist motorists in reaching their destination safely and efficiently, without being unnecessarily slowed down, the change has been enforced as a method of inspiring more driver confidence on NSW roads.
All road users must comply with the posted speed limit, including where speed limits are reduced due to road work, which often results in changed road conditions.
Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchinson, says, “Motorists across NSW deserve to spend less time stuck in unnecessary traffic and more time with family and friends, which is why we have made this important change.”
“But as everyone has experienced, leaving speed restrictions in place outside of construction hours often slows down traffic movement.
“This change will help traffic keep moving, reduce frustration for motorists is critical. We are not changing or weakening any rules around safety.
