The Bank Holiday has its origins in the United Kingdom, where it was introduced to compensate banking staff for the extra work involved in balancing accounts after the 30 June end of the financial year. In Australia, New South Wales adopted the tradition through the Bank Holiday Act of 1875, with the holiday originally observed on 1 August each year. In 1912, it was moved to the first Monday in August, where it has remained ever since.
While the days of manually balancing ledger books are long behind us, banking has continued to evolve. Today, internet banking, contactless payments, mobile apps and ever changing regulations have transformed the way we bank.
