The Boorowa Rovers didn’t get the start to the season they were after last Sunday going down by 34-0 against the Crookwell Green Devils. It’s always a tough road trip and last Sunday was no different as Crookwell ran in the seven tries to nil.
The Green Devils were always in control of the game which could be best described as a sloppy encounter with both sides making a mountain of errors.
Crookwell deserved to win but Boorowa were simply awful in a game some described as the Rovers poorest game in several seasons. That said, it was only round one and they will be better for the run. Boorowa had chances to score points, but they lacked execution at critical times in attack.
For Boorowa, there were a few shining lights, and none tried harder than Tristan Mears who picked up the Best and Fairest three points. Nick Stephens got two points and will be a handful for oppositions defences. Matt Canellis was strong as always and got one point. Tristian was also voted the Players Player.
Congratulations to Alex Stewart who clocked up 100 games for the Rovers last weekend. Alex has been an integral part of the club for several years, greatly contributing both on and off the field. He led the side to Premiership glory in 2023 and has been an inspiration to those around him.
In other George Tooke Shield games last weekend, Harden 56 beat the Googong Goannas 6, North Canberra Bears 36 defeated the defending champions Bungendore 22, and the Snowy River Bears 42 were too good for the UC Stars 10.
The league tag saw Boorowa return to the field in two seasons and there was much to like about their game. They were brave in defeat going down 22-8 to the She Devils who featured in the semis last year.
Considering it was Boorowa’s first match in a couple of seasons, and they are still light on for numbers, it was an impressive performance. With a little more time to get their combinations settled, the Roverettes will be a force. They have a good mix of experienced players back combined with some fresh faces that will make an impact.
The best and fairest points on the weekend saw Emma Craig pick up three points. Two Points went to Lilly Porch and one point each went to Imogen Pye and Mackella Pye. Cheyenne Grocott- Robins was voted Players Player.
This Saturday sees the Boorowa teams having their first home game of the season when they take on the North Canberra Bears in both the league tag and George Tooke Shield. The league tag starts at 1.15 followed by the men’s game at 2.30pm.
The Rovers face a tough task at home this weekend against the North Canberra Bears. The Bears are coming off an impressive first up victory against the defending Champions Bungendore and will be chock full of confidence. The Rovers will be better for the run last Sunday and always grow a leg at home. Like the Rovers, the girls will be better from last weeks hit out and will be looking to post their first league tag win.
In other GTS games to be played this weekend the UC Stars host Crookwell, Harden are at home against the Snowy River Bears whilst Googong travel to Bungendore to take on the Tigers.
It’s a big Saturday of footy at the Showground with the Boorowa Rugby sides also playing their first home games so why not enjoy a beautiful Autumn Day and support the local teams.
