Burrowa House was nationally recognised again recently when two of the staff were invited to Admiralty House in Sydney for an afternoon tea hosted by the Governor General of Australia, Sam Mostyn.
The visit was hosted to celebrate the success of the Maggie Beer program to enhance nutritional needs for the elderly.
The Maggie Beer Foundation, funded by the Australian Federal Government’s Department of Health and Aged Care, has focused on delivering education and training to improve the dining, food, and nutritional outcomes for older people now in Aged Care. This education program offers support to Providers, Homes, Cooks and Chefs in a range of activities, and they are all free.
Burrowa House Facility Manager Jocelyn Piper and Chief Cook Danielle Carney were part of a select few from several Aged Care facilities in the state that got to mingle at one of the most historic and prestigious venues in the Country.
The foundation has included some celebrity chefs, and in attendance at the function was renowned chef Kylie Kwong. Guests were treated to some of Maggie Beer’s delicious specialty canapés and then given a tour of the kitchen.
On a perfect Sydney day, overlooking the breathtaking Sydney Harbour, it was a wonderful opportunity to connect with leaders in the sector and celebrate the program’s ongoing impact. To have a small facility like Burrowa House recognised for achievements in the program is a huge accolade.
Over the past two years, Burrowa House staff have worked closely with the foundation and implemented suggestions to make great meals even better for residents.
Another well-known Chef, James Reason, visited Boorowa on several occasions as part of the program. James was the host of the popular TV show “Alive and Cooking.”James was particularly impressed by the Boorowa Kitchen staff and the facility in general.
Programs like this are crucial for Aged Care homes and will continue to ensure Burrowa House maintains a four out of five-star rating by the Department of Health and the Aged Care Commission.
Whilst the program has finished, its legacy will remain as Burrowa House continues to provide outstanding meal options for its residents. And the best thing is that all meals are cooked fresh, and in some cases, the ingredients come from the facility’s very own garden. This is a rare thing these days, with many facilities only providing frozen meal options.
Burrowa House recently purchased a new state-of-the-art oven, which has enabled our kitchen staff to produce even better meals. The day was a great recognition for Burrowa House, who continue to punch above its weight with much larger facilities.
In other news, it is exciting times for Burrowa House, which now has its next project of building a new enclosed sunroom firmly in its sights for 2026. More on this in the new year, but with the assistance of such a wonderful community, Burrowa House is now able to proceed with this project. We will keep you posted.
