Boorowa’s senior cricketers the ‘Big Bottles’ had a great start to the new season with a seven-wicket victory over the Murringo Mavericks at Boorowa on October 11. Both sides looked a bit dusty as is usually the case in the first round, where bowlers are trying to get their rhythm and Batsmen are looking to get their groove.
On a lush recreation ground, the batsmen struggled to score quickly but it was a decisive unbeaten fourth wicket partnership of 83 between Mark Birks and Liam Birks that proved the difference between the two teams.
Murringo won the toss and batted with their openers making a cautious start before losing their first wicket on 17. The Boorowa bowling was reasonably tight for the first game of the year, and a sluggish out-field restricted the Mavericks to 4/60 in the first 20 Overs.
The innings didn’t really evolve for Murringo as they continued to find the going tough being dismissed for 116 in the 36th over. The pick of the batsmen was Peter Joliffe with an unbeaten 34. The best of the bowlers was Ben Klose with 3/28 whilst Chris Dwyer made a welcome return to the team with 2/21.
In reply, Boorowa also struggled early, losing 3/35 before the match winning stand by Mark and Liam Birks. Both batsmen played sensible cricket picking up plenty of singles as well as the odd boundary. Boorowa eventually cruised to victory in just 24 overs with still a lot of batting still in the shed. Mark Birks finished on 47 Not Out whilst Liam Birks was impressive with 37 Not Out.
