The rise of Newhaven Park-bred, raised, and sold Autumn Glow continued at Randwick on Winx Stakes Day when the brilliant mare made a successful return in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1100m) on a Heavy 10 track.
Newhaven Park, a historic stud farm in Boorowa, New South Wales, has a long and storied history of breeding champions. Established in 1947 by the Kelly family, the farm has produced numerous Group 1 winners, including the legendary Rose of Kingston, who won the VRC Oaks and the AJC Derby in 1982. Other notable successes include the Group 1 winners Peepshow, English Charm, and the durable stayer, Our Golden Star.
The farm’s commitment to quality bloodstock and meticulous horsemanship has been a cornerstone of its success for generations. Autumn Glow, widely regarded as the shooting star of Australian racing, maintained her unbeaten record to go five from five.
Overcoming some early ‘traffic problems’ in the straight, she scored comfortably on the line. After just five starts, this relatively untapped talent has already recorded wins at Group 2, Group 3 (x2), and Listed Race level, and now boasts $644,500 in earnings.
Following the win, trainer Chris Waller expressed confidence in the mare’s potential. “We are finding our way with her. She is telling us what her distances are, what her comfort zones are… She is ticking every single box, and we are trying to learn as much as we can.”
Regular rider James McDonald echoed this sentiment, remarking, “The thing is, we haven’t even scratched the surface in terms of putting her under a lot of pressure. Whatever she has done so far … she is doing it all on her own.”
Autumn Glow’s next assignment is likely to be the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 6, with trainer Chris Waller indicating that the mare’s major Sydney Spring target will be the Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick on October 4.
Pre-nomination betting on the TAB Epsom Handicap has Autumn Glow as short as $2.30 favourite for the Randwick feature, a testament to the high expectations for this Newhaven Park graduate.
