With just under a month to go, excitement is building across the Hilltops as Boorowa prepares to host one of the region’s most beloved events, the Boorowa Irish Woolfest, running from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 October 2025.
Held over the October long weekend, the Woolfest is a vibrant celebration of Boorowa’s Irish heritage and proud wool-growing tradition. For locals, it’s a time to come together and showcase what makes their town special. For visitors, it’s an unforgettable taste of country charm, community spirit, and shear fun.
The centrepiece of the festival is the famous Running of the Sheep, where dozens of woolly Merinos guided by skilled sheepdogs trot down Boorowa’s main street in a delightfully quirky spectacle. Coupled with the colourful Street Parade, it sets the tone for a weekend packed with entertainment and community connection. But the Woolfest offers far more than sheep.
Over the three days, Boorowa will come alive with wood chopping demonstrations, working dog displays, massed pipe and drum performances, shearing competitions, vintage engines, and live music. Returning favourites The Raglins and Double Shot Maggie will be back by popular demand, and Simon Watts will once again mesmerise the crowd with his captivating violin performances.
This year also introduces a new, eco-conscious event, the Upcycled Fashion Contest. Spearheaded by local upcycling advocate and Boorowa Rotary Club member Lyn Diskon, the competition challenges entrants to create garments from second-hand textiles, with at least 50% wool content.
“I’ve always loved turning old things into something new,” says Lyn. “There’s so much potential in what we throw away. This contest is about giving those materials a second life and making something beautiful in the process.”
Rooted in her upbringing, Lyn’s passion for repurposing is driving this exciting new addition to the festival. The contest is already gaining interest and promises to become a highlight for years to come.
The weekend schedule is packed with something for everyone: On Friday, the 3rd of October, the festival kicks off with the Charity Art Show & Sale Opening Night at the Old Courthouse, raising funds for local schools.
Meanwhile, live music at The Absolutely Superb Bibliothèque and Occasional Wine Bar will set the tone.
On Saturday, the 4th of October, the day with barefoot bowls at the Boorowa Ex-Services & Citizens Club, cheer on the Quick Shear Competition, and head to Boorowa Park for an afternoon and evening of fun. Expect jumping castles, face painting, live children’s entertainment, a movie under the stars, food trucks, and a spectacular fireworks finale all free.
On Sunday the 5th of October This is the big one. The streets will come alive with the Street Parade and Running of the Sheep, followed by a full day of festivities, music, markets, demonstrations, competitions, and more. Locals are encouraged to get involved, whether by volunteering, participating in the parade, or setting up a market stall.
Community groups, schools, and businesses are already well into preparations, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. So mark your calendar, grab your green gear, and get ready to experience the heart and soul of Boorowa.
