The Boorowa Hospital Auxiliary is an integral part of the local community, working tirelessly to raise funds and provide equipment that improves the lives of patients at the Boorowa Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) and its residents.
Jenny Carter (pictured), the Auxiliary’s current president, has been deeply involved in the organisation for years. She recently shared her thoughts on the group’s impact and its ongoing need for support. Jenny, who previously served as secretary before stepping into the president’s role, believes in the importance of having people willing to take on leadership positions.
“President is the easiest job,” she says, noting that it is more about being a figurehead, guiding meetings, and ensuring fairness within the group. Her experience as a former Principal of a large Sydney school has given her a unique perspective on leadership, which she brings to the Auxiliary.
Despite its dedicated team, the Auxiliary is facing a challenge. As the group ages, they are in desperate need of new members to continue supporting the MPS. “We are a small group, and we need more hands on deck,” Jenny explains.
“Murrumbidgee Health provides the essential equipment for the MPS, but we step in to fund additional items that make life better for both patients and staff.”
In the past year alone, the Auxiliary has raised approximately $20,000 to purchase essential equipment, including a bed lifter and special bathing equipment designed to improve safety for both residents and staff.
To fundraise, the Auxiliary hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a Melbourne Cup lunch, a Christmas hamper raffle, and a Mother’s Day cake stall. Community support is vital to their success, and many locals whether they’re able to join the group or not contribute in any way they can.
For instance, Kerry’s Nickety Nacks donated goods for sale, while others knit items for fundraising efforts. Jenny joined the Hospital Auxiliary in 2014, shortly after moving back to Boorowa, inspired by her mother’s time in the local nursing home.
“It was something worth supporting, and I really enjoyed working with such a great group of people,” she says.
For Jenny, it’s not just about doing good it’s about improving the community and making a tangible difference for local residents. The Auxiliary’s next big event is the Melbourne Cup lunch, with the organisation continually exploring new ways to engage the town and support the MPS. As the group celebrates its continued impact, the Hospital Auxillary remains committed to strengthening this vital part of Boorowa’s health and social services.
