Boorowa’s beloved rivalry between the Rovers and the Goldies is taking to the fairways for a good cause, with the annual Rovers vs Goldies Charity Golf Day teeing off this Sunday at the Boorowa Golf Club.
The event is more than just a light-hearted grudge match; it’s a fundraiser that supports the Boorowa Touch Football and Netball Carnival, an important annual event that benefits local schools and children in the community.
Graham Jones, Principal of Boorowa Central School, says the golf day has become a valuable part of the town’s fundraising calendar. “They did it last year and possibly the year before as well,” Mr Jones said. “The proceeds go towards running our annual Touch Football and Netball Carnival. That fundraiser, in turn, supports both schools in the area and, most importantly, goes directly back into the kids.”
Mr Jones also clarified that while the golf day supports the school, it’s not a P&C initiative. “It’s all run by the two football clubs. They’ve taken the lead, and we’re really grateful for their support.”
This year’s event promises plenty of friendly competition and fun. The format is a three-person Ambrose, and as organiser, Jason Stuart, President of the Boorowa Golf Club and former President of the Goldies, explains, it’s open to everyone. “You don’t have to be a current player,” Stuart said. “You just turn up, pick a side, either Rovers or Goldies and have a go. It’s all about having a bit of fun and raising some money.”
The day kicks off with registration at 10:30am, followed by an 11:00am tee-off. The entry fee is $75 per team, and participants can either sign up on the day or call the Boorowa Rec Club to book ahead.
“There will be some prizes for winning teams and placings,” Stuart said. “Plus, a few bits of merchandise have been donated by both clubs, so there’s a chance to take something home even if you don’t win.”
Importantly, the event also adds to the local sporting atmosphere ahead of finals season, with both the Rovers and Goldies playing home games the day before, which organisers hope will draw even more people to Sunday’s event.
“We’re really hoping for a good crowd,” Stuart added. “It’s the business end of the season for both clubs, and this will be a great social outing before things get serious in the finals.”
Each team will be aligned with either the Rovers or the Goldies, and at the end of the day, the winning club will take home a trophy with bragging rights that last until next year’s re-match. So grab some mates, a few clubs, and your team spirit, and head down to Boorowa Golf Club this Sunday for a day of sport, community, and a bit of cheeky competition all for a great cause.
