The morning of the official opening of the Marsden Street Medical Practice in Boorowa was marked by a palpable sense of anticipation within the community. This event signified a significant advancement in local healthcare provision.
For an extended period, the residents of Boorowa have navigated the inherent challenges of accessing medical services in a rural setting. These challenges included the necessity of travelling considerable distances for specialised appointments, difficulties in securing consistent general practitioner care, and concerns regarding the availability of emergency medical support. The establishment of the Marsden Street Medical Practice directly addresses these long-standing issues.
The practice is now owned by Dr Asitha Wickramaratne, who also oversees the Boorowa Street Medical in Young and the Murrumbateman Health Hub. This ownership underscores a commitment to high quality, accessible care, notably including bulk billing for Medicare-covered services, aiming to reduce financial barriers for patients.
In January 2025 Dr Wick took on the mammoth task of setting up a whole new practice within the walls of what was once the Boorowa Medical Centre. It underwent extensive renovation to accommodate the new practice. The interior now features a bright and welcoming waiting area, fresh paint and is newly equipped.
The practice is also pleased to introduce Dr Bushra Maqsood, a female General Practitioner now working at the facility, further enhancing the range of care available.
Efforts are currently underway to retrieve existing patient records to ensure a smooth transition for new patients, though this process cannot be guaranteed for all records.
Furthermore, the practice is actively recruiting another full-time GP with the strategic objective of expanding its services to meet the growing needs of the community.
Upon the official opening of the doors, the practice began receiving its first patients. The Marsden Street Medical Practice represents more than just a new facility; it symbolises the collective determination and resilience of the Boorowa community. It underscores Dr Wick’s commitment to the Boorowa community in overcoming challenges and fostering a supportive environment for its residents.
As operations commenced, the initial excitement transitioned into a steady provision of essential healthcare services, establishing a new foundation for health, optimism, and future prosperity within Boorowa.
