The Boorowa Goldies delighted their home crowd with a dominant 38–8 victory over Young, fueled by a powerful second-half performance at the Boorowa Recreation Ground. The win was made all the more special by the club’s Annual Ladies Day, which saw clear skies and packed stands, creating a memorable atmosphere.
While the final score suggests a blowout, the first half was a tight contest, with both teams heading into the sheds locked at 5–5. Goldies captain Keagan Size admitted it was a “pretty ordinary first half” from both sides, but acknowledged it was “competitive and close,” which made for good spectating.
The turning point came during halftime. Size explained that the team focused on improving their attitude toward discipline and playing more strategically. “We talked about holding onto the ball, not giving away penalties, and not piggybacking them down the field. That’s how teams score when they’re given too many chances,” he said.
The second-half shift in mindset paid off immediately. Tries from Ryan Simpson, George Chudleigh, and Josh Sloane propelled the Goldies into a commanding lead.
Despite only converting one of six attempts, the sheer number of tries and consistent forward pressure sealed the win.
Size noted that the team “cleaned it up and kept it tight” in the second half, making it difficult for Young to find opportunities after a first half plagued by “simple mistakes handling errors, lapses in concentration.”
The festive Ladies’ Day atmosphere undoubtedly contributed to the victory, with a large turnout of supporters celebrating the club’s women and enjoying an afternoon of community, sunshine, and top-class rugby.
Goldilocks Battle Hard Against Young Yabettes
In a separate but equally spirited match, the Goldilocks took on the Young Yabettes, ultimately falling 39–5. This game played in fantastic spirit, saw the Goldilocks bring in some bench assistance from past players and Grenfell to bolster their numbers for their big day.
It was a fast-paced and free-flowing game with plenty of points scored. The Goldilocks players gained valuable experience from their recruits.
It was particularly good to see the Penrose sisters—Mollie, Tamara, and Sienna—back on the field together, all playing strong games. Standout performances earned Mollie McKinley 3 points, Peta Coffa 2 points, and Mikaela Andersen 1 point. Eden Barnett was named Players’ Player, while Mikaela Andersen also received Mike’s Mug, and Madi Penrose was Richard’s Pick.
A Monumental Ladies Day Success
A huge thanks was extended to @youngyabbies for their support of Ladies Day 2025 and their teams playing in great spirit.
Appreciation was also given to Butto and Anna for their refereeing, acknowledging the difficulty and scarcity of referees. The success of Ladies Day was largely attributed to Phoebe McGrath and the “army of BRU volunteers.” The event was a monumental success, raising approximately $25,000 for Burrowa House and the Nathan Stapleton Spinal Injury Recovery Fund. Final figures are expected to be announced soon.
Looking ahead, Goldies captain Keagan Size emphasized the need to maintain momentum as finals approach. Their next challenge will be Cootamundra, a team known for its speed and strength through the centre. Size acknowledged their strength, stating, “On their day, if the ball bounces their way, they’re hard to stop.” However, he remains confident in the Goldies’ approach: “It’s about sticking to our structures and playing the way we’ve trained all season.”
With the impressive win over Young and the finals looming, the Goldies are shaping up as serious contenders, with their home crowd firmly behind them.
