Rovers First Trial

The Boorowa Rovers take to the field for the first time in 2025 when they play the Moruya Sharks at Moruya on Friday night, March 21.

The teams will play for the Ack Weyman Memorial Shield which is an important trial game for the two clubs.

The now annual event first started through the family ties of current coach Alex Stewarts’ connection to the Weyman’s on the South Coast.

Ack Weyman is a Moruya legend having made an enormous contribution not only to rugby league but to sport general on the South Coast. The two teams will play on the Ack Weyman oval that is dedicated to this icon.

The annual game has resulted in a great bond being formed between the two clubs but most importantly provides a good hit out for the two teams as they continue their tough preseasons. Both sides are usually evenly matched and the game whilst physical and competitive is played in good spirits.

Last year saw the Sharks travel to Boorowa and take home the shield by 32-22. The Rovers will be keen to reverse that result on the Sharks home ground. For the Rovers, this game is crucial in the lead up to the season opener on April 26. Coaches Alex Stewart and Cooper Cross will use the game to develop some new combinations.

Whilst the Rovers have retained the bulk of last years squad, there are players making a return after a season in the wilderness. With still over a month to go until round one, the team will hopefully hit the ground running as early wins will be crucial.

Friday night’s game for the Rovers at Ack Weyman oval commences at 6.15pm with the after party commencing around 8.00pm at the Adelaide Hotel in Moruya.

In other Rover’s news, a Barefoot Bowls Day will be held at the Ex-Services Club on Sunday March 30 commencing at 2pm. All players, families, supporters, and sponsors are most welcome at this season’s launch.

The season proper will start with a home game on April 26 against the UC Stars. These teams will also play for the Chris Turner Shield as well as the crucial competition points. It’s a huge season ahead and the action all starts with the trial tomorrow at Moruya.

For anyone who wants to become more involved in the local club, we have lots of ways you can contribute. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well it takes a village to run a football club. Just contact the committee and we will give you all the details on how you can get more involved. A recap of the team’s trial will be in next week’s Boorowa Times.
